Traditional Pastry

“Traditional pastries are a national obsession in Portugal .

Many explorers gave these as gifts to monasteries and convents, where the inmates prayed for their mortal souls while they braved the storm-tossed oceans. And so the tradition of making doces conventuais (conventual sweets) began.

These went down a treat with the royals and aristocrats of the great kingdom, and these recipes have changed little in the centuries since.

Many Portuguese sweet treats have spiritual names

Pastel de feijão (bean pastry),Bola de Berlim (Berlin ball),Queijada (cheesecake),Travesseiro (pastry pillow),Pão de Deus (God’s bread),Ovos moles (soft eggs),Pastel de nata (custard tart). These are just some examples of the exquisite fine portuguese traditional pastry.
